Popular Magazine vs Scholarly Journal Article

The articles that I have found are:
Scholarly:
Authors  Garland, B.; Wodahl, E.; Mayfield, J.
Title  Prisoners reentry in a small metropolitan community: obstacles and policy recommendations
Source  Criminal Justice Policy Review, 2011, 22, 1, 90

Popular:
Author  Lattimore, P.
Title  The challenges of reentry
Source  Corrections Today, 2007

These article are similar in that they are both written well. They are easy to read and stick to facts.
The are different in the fact that the scholarly article sites references and has no advertisements, which are present in the popular article. Another big difference is that the popular article is very low level and doesn't go into too much detail whereas the scholarly article is very specific.

  1. Hi Amanda,

Thank you for your post on popular magazine vs
    scholarly journal articles.

Do both of these articles address an actual research study, or simply present facts?

(BTW--It looks like Corrections Today is a trade journal, not a popular magazine.)

    Sincerely,
    Professor Wexelbaum

  2. Hi Prof. Wexelbaum,

I realize that Corrections Today was a trade journal (forgot to specify), but I couldn't find a popular magazine article.

The scholarly article does talk about a specific study.

  3. Hi Amanda,

What are some examples of popular magazines? You can search ASP to find out if articles from those titles are indexed if you click on "Publications".

    Sincerely,
    Professor Wexelbaum

  4. Hi Prof. Wexelbaum,

Popular magazines are Time, Newsweek and Washington Post. I did find an article while searching ASP.

    Author Ripley, A.
    Title Outside the gates
    Source Time, 2002, 159, 3, 56

This popular article is well written and follows an individual after his prison release. The article does also include facts from the year of publication, 2002.

  5. Thank you for sharing that article, Amanda. I wonder if things have changed much for released prisoners since 2002. We will find out!

    Sincerely,
    Professor Wexelbaum
